MMD Type 2 Var. 4.2 R1
  Of the Patriotic War 2nd Class

Orders of the Great Patriotic War were instituted on 20 May 1942 and until 16 June 1943 were on a suspension (type 1). Type two existed from 1943 until 11 March 1985 when on the ocassion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the Great patriotic war Type 3 was issued. They were produced in three mints (Krasnokamskij -KMD, Moscow - MMD and Leningrad - LMD) and the Moscow factory Platinopribor - MZPP. They came in many variations and sub-variations.

This award is made in the Moskovskij Monetnij Dvor (MMD) where the production of type 2 started in December 1943. It was made in 4 variations with several sub-variations. Variation 1 known nos. are 72013- 74417. Variation 2 was manufactured in the first half of 1944 was made in two time/number intervals (1st January-March 1944 nos. 74824-76500 and the 2nd, between April and June 1944 with nos. 170055-180003). The reverse differs by no mint mark and by a circle reverse (so-called "kanava"). Variation 3 was made after 1959 in two intervals (1st nos. 927592-928462 and 2nd nos. 928654-923391). Variation 4 was made from 1966-69 in two sub--variations (nos. 930007-933396 and 934646-984958). This one is the 2nd and is distinguished from the 1st because the serial number is made by a rotating tool (not engraved). The mint mark and serial number mint are below the screwpost (type 3 had the mint mark above the screw post). Made of silver, weighs 28.2g and has an alloy fastening plate (6.2g).
