Type 3 Variation 1 R1
Of the Patriotic War 2nd Class 1985 issue

Orders of the Great Patriotic War were instituted on 20 May 1942 and until 16 June 1943 were on a suspension (type 1). Type two existed from 1943 until 11 March 1985 when on the ocassion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the Great patriotic war Type 3 was issued. Type 1-2 were produced in three mints (Krasnokamskij -KMD, Moscow - MMD and Leningrad - LMD) and the Moscow factory Platinopribor - MZPP) in many variations and sub-variations. Type 3 was made in the Moscow and Leningrad mints but also a number of other palces, including the Leningrad factory "Russkie somocvety", the Moscow, Bornnickij, Sverdlovsk, Riga and Tallin Jewelry Factories, the Mster Factory "Jeweler" and the Kaliningrad Amber factory. Each had its number serie which cotinuned after the last of type 2. The first type 3 was no. 9857101 and the last 6715100 (according to Durov). Mondvor.ru considers the range to be from 1058355 to 6714564.

Type 3 is very common (so-called "Brezhnev" issue) and was awarded to millions on the ocassion of the 40th anniversary of the end of WWII. A classical example how the Soviet Union was no longer the superpower - the order is stamped from one piece and the reverse side shows how it lost on intricacy through mass production as compared to earlier types. This is variation 1 (variation 2 had no depression around the screw on reverse and is harder to find). Its with a document and I have several spare copies, with documents and without - see the awards for exchange page or contact me.
